I got a 2nd monitor (new) and plugged it into my graphics card (only 6 months old and is a MSI gtx 970) and now I can't play games without my computer restarting with no bsod and no bluescreenview error message. Did my monitor kill my graphics card?
Highly unlikely unless the monitor is faulty, was the PC off when you plugged it in?
My guess would be the gpu is not seated properly as plugging in the new cable could have loosened it or even the gpu power cable has become loose. Try reseating the GPU and power cable
I've done all that and it was probably on when I plugged it in. I thought it might be the PSU but i'm leaning more towards the GPU being faulty. Its annoying because it had NO issue whatsoever until I plugged in my 2nd monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236102 I have two of these monitors. I have reseated both my GPU in the same pci-e slot as well as an alternate and unplugged the pins and replugged them in to ensure they're fully in. My PSU has 2 gpu 8-pin slots for multiple graphics cards so I switched it to the other one and it made no difference. How unlucky do you have to be to ruin a graphics card through plugging in a dvi cable?
Hmm, that's quite strange. I'm running two monitors of my 750Ti with no issues, so it's obviously nothing to do with lack of power. Is it possible for you to game with just the one monitor plugged in?
None of the pins are damaged are they? I can't see how a monitor could damage a graphics card. It could just be a coincidence and it might not have anything to do with the GPU. Have you kept an eye on your temps? Maybe a PSU issue? The added power draw of having a second monitor plugged in, although minimal, might have showcased a fault in the PSU? I know relatively nothing about PSU's though so I wouldn't put much credibility on that last point.
I monitored my temps on one screen while loading up the benchmarks on the right and the temps never passed 60c on the gpu and even lower on the cpu although that does seem high for a benchmark that hasn't started yet. I can diagnose a PSU issue through my friend's PSU sometime soon or even tonight, but if that proves to be nothing then I hope MSI will be willing to help.
I am starting to suspect that, i'm at my friend's house trying to diagnose a power issue. I'm going to use his PSU to power my system. I ran the benchmark and it was able to actually make it into it for about 2 seconds before it restarted again. At my house I am only able to make it to the exact same place in the loading bar before it restarts. My building is quite old and I thought I could be overloading my outlet because I have a considerable number of things that are plugged into my room which only has 2 outlets (4 plugs) and that could be the issue right there which would be MONSTEROUSLY inconvenient to fix, if at all. I am about to use his PSU to power my rig and see if its my PSU. I'll post about the results.
I wasn't able to boot off of my friend's PSU but in plugging mine back in I was able to make it through Fire Strike entirely. So it appears it was a loose cable or something but i'm going to re-run the software, re-cable manage and then re-run the test. I'll post an update as I go but it seems to be fixed? Based solely on 1 successful benchmark, anyways.
Apparently in taking out every cord connecting to my motherboard/gpu/psu and plugging them back in HARD worked. My motherboard 4-pin extension (20pins + 4pins) wasn't in properly so i'd like to think plugging that one in properly combined with a lot of pressing on cables worked.
