Can AMD virtual cores be turned off

So I had one more question about AMD Ryzen. So now with Ryzen you get X cores and X virtual cores. I am guessing that this works similar to Intel's hyper threading so my question is can you turn off these virtual cores like you can with an I7? I have been out of the loop for a while but during my time here in the past it was constantly the same speech over and over again.."if you are going with Intel and all you are doing is gaming get an I5 because games don't make use of hyper threading and can even sometimes hurt performance on some games." So is it the same story with AMD's virtual cores? Do games not make use of it and can it even hurt performance in some games? If the answer is yes to both those questions then it seems a wasted feature that I was hoping you could just turn off.
