I recently upgraded my rig (coming from a 13 year old pentium computer). Was originaly just going for a budget build since i was only going to play World of Wacraft. So i just bought an i5 7400 on a budget motherboard (MSI Z270 Mortar). But with luck, my friend was selling his GTX 1080 for cheap. So my question is, can the 1080 run smoothly on a budget cpu because i really dont want to buy another cpu again. thank you guys!

(BTW, will be playing at 1080p and 1440p resolution)

Solution
Of course it can. Although most likely you will not be able to utilize full power of this GPU, unless you run high resolution monitor, but that does not prevent it from working with your CPU just fine. The plus side is that you will be able to crank up graphical settings to max in most games if you run on 1080p monitor, minus is that if you try to get really high FPS your CPU will be the limiting factor.

Thank you for your replies bros. the thing is, I'm really worried about stutters and flickers that i keep hearing about. I plan to upgrade my cpu down the road but not at the moment since i just actually bought it. and the GPU is really hard to pass on since its cheaper than a 1070 in my country. (hes a good friend who upgraded to 1080ti) I dont really mind the FPS as long as i get a constant 60 FPS on my 60hz, I will be a happy man.

planning to upgrade in the future, but for now this setup will do. Just not so sure about the card.
I am on a 650w PSU by the way.

Any stutters and flickers that you would have with the GTX 1080 you would also have with lesser powered cards. There is NO WAY a more powerful card to have trouble with smoothness that a less powerful card wouldn't also have at the same resolution/settings.

What brand and model of PSU?
