Can an optical jack be installed into a television that does not have one?

Some older TV have Digital SPDIF Audio out, which is a close cousin of Optical and all u would need is a $10 converter.

An analog audio output can be installed by connecting a speaker to line level converter to the wires that go to the internal TV speakers. It would be a variable output controlled by the TV remote.
