[SOLVED] Can any HDMI cable support 1080p @ 144hz?

So, I recently decided I wanted to upgrade from TV to 144 Hz. But, I heard you can't use HDMI for 144 Hz. I have gotten confused by what I've read and I believe HDMI 1.4 can support 144 Hz. Is this true?

so I guess its supported some how or as I see it a gimmick - I guess you use what ever connection they sent with the monitor for you to use and it works ???

No. Only DisplayPort can support that. It has been able to support that since 2009.

HDMI can only support 120Hz, and even then, only with version 1.4b or 2.0. the following chart shows what each version of HDMI can support, but it seems to show that 1.4a can do 120Hz which I have confirmed several times it cannot support.

in the end it will work as advertised or it don't ?? and the monitor should have a correct cord supplied with it for its use

Displayport has supported pretty much everything since 2009... HDMI keeps trying to catch up, and not quite getting there.

A Common misconception but hdmi 1.4 is 100% able to support 1080p at 144hz. It's the monitors that the majority of the time don't allow it. An example of a monitor that supports it is the viewsonic XG2041

It depends on monitor support. If the monitor supports 144 Hz over HDMI then it works, if it doesn't then it doesn't. Most monitors are limited to 60 Hz over HDMI, but not all. There is no universal yes/no answer, it's just "maybe, depends on the monitor".

HDMI 1.4 is capable of 1080p120Hz (bitrate is only 8.91 gbps and the maximum for HDMI 1.4 is only 10.2 gbps) BUT it's up to the manufacturers to decide the signals they want to send / accept. Unfortunately 120Hz / 144Hz are note common signals that's why they usually don't bother with them.

As Glenwing said, there are some monitors that support it but not a lot and I can't find a list of those...
