Can Anyone Please Explain What I Can Do With The mPCIe Slot On The ASUS Maximus GENE?

Hello All,

I am thinking about getting the ASUS Maximus GENE Motherboard and I have one question about the mPCIe slot...

The Maximus GENE is a Micro ATX motherboard and it has 3 PCIe slots and one mPCIe slot. I have done some Google searches to try and find out what's the purpose of the mPCIe slot and what I have seen so far are people using it for WiFi or with the following card:

I think that cards provides a connector for some external device but I don't recognize the PIN configuration. Is that for connecting a hard drive (it looks like SATA Data + Power)?
If so, do they make external enclosures with this type of connection or do you have to just connect a "bare" drive to it?

I need more USB 3.0 and/or sSATA back panel connectors on my case and since this motherboard only has 3 slots (and I am using all of them for 2x video cards, 1x wireless card). Do they make some kind of mPCIe to USB 3.0 and/or eSATA card that would fit this board and give me external connectors?

Another thing I noticed about this board is it has an M.2 slot right where the "missing" PCIe slot would be. I was wondering if I could buy some kind of adapter that goes from the M.2 connector to USB 3.0 and/or eSATA on the board to one of those angled brackets that screw into the case slot? (Note that I would need the adapter to be as small as possible because my video card in slot 1 is very wide.)

Something like this:

Thank you,

Jan

Good to know but I need more USB 3.0/eSATA connectors because I depend on external drives (mounted in enclosures) to backup a lot of data. I need more ports and faster I/O if possible.

Also, what kind of connector is that on the motherboard picture? Is it SATA Data + Power? Is that connector accessible outside the case (e.g. through the back panel plate) or is it only internal?
