Hi all, looking for recommendations of a game that fits some or all of the
following kind of categories:

First-person
Adventure based
Preferably no (or minimal) weapons, action, shooting or blasting aliens
Lets you just walk around and explore the environment
No time limit pressure or scores to beat, just chill out and soak up the
atmosphere
Based in the real world
Atmospheric
Perhaps chilling, mythical or supernatural but not necessary
Provides 'escapism' in a realistic setting
Preferably set in the present day, or 19th-20th century
Time Travel would be a real plus

So many games today are based around collecting objects, shooting people, or
beat 'me up, and those that are similar to the above like Sims are cartoony,
not realistic. I'd love to switch on my TV, switch off the rest of my life,
and just explore a totally new world without having to 'do' anything -- and
one that totally absorbs me, so that I want to go back to it time and time
again.

Let me know guys 'n' girls, cheers!

Echo Night fits your description perfectly...only problem is that it is for
the original PlayStation, not Xbox. There was a follow-up, but it is a PS2
exclusive.

Other than that, sounds like you want a 3D version of "Myst"...

Thanks Bel, nice looking game. Some great screens at
http://tinyurl.com/5ll9d. Sadly it doesn't appear to have been released on
Xbox in the UK -- even amazon don't have it. And Syberia II is apparently
hard to follow if you didn't play the original, along with having some
annoying features and not be first person.

Still a contender though, cheers!

If only it was on Xbox! 🙁 I'd much rather play these games on the sofa
with the living room lights dimmed, than at my office desk. I guess the
publisher didn't think of that :-S

Thanks - looks good. I tried the original Myst about 10 years ago and found
it a bit static so I'm pleasently surprised to see this has 'free look'.

If oyu can put up with some combat. Morrowind is prettty free roaming.
Pikeys of the Carribean also uses the Morrowind engine so that could be
worth a look.

Thanks, has great reviews. Seems to involve combat with cartoony graphics
though, but I'll definitately put it 'somewhere' on my list :)

Beyond Good & Evil comes close to many of your desires.

It's 1st and 3rd person (mainly 3rd), with an emphasis more on exploration
than on combat. There is combat, but most of it is pretty simple if you
ask me. There is, however, a lot of stealth in the game, meaning you'll
have to sneak by guards when they aren't looking. Requires you to study
their marching patterns, and move accordingly. There's also a great deal
of exploration you can do - both on foot, and using various vehicles. You
can even enter races to earn additional cash (the required races are easy
- the extra ones are just for bonus items.)

You play Jade, who runs an orphanage with her humanoid-pig partner (I
can't remember his name right now) Jade's also a part time photo
journalist and troubleshooter. During one mission, Jade gets involved
with a group trying to uncover a conpiracy that the so-called protectors
of your colony are actually kidnapping citizens for their own insidious
plans. You'll be required to infiltrate various facilities in order to
obtain photographic evidence to help the resistance's cause. You can also
use your camera to photograph new and rare species of animals you come
across for extra money and orbs. You use the orbs to purchase upgrades
for your vehicle.

Lol 'Pikeys'! Ta but too much combat in both of them, but I know they're
good. Keep 'em coming. Ideally I want something that reminds me of a game
I used to have on the Commodore 64 (!), I think called 'The Time Machine',
where you start in a space ship, and have to figure out how to get back to
your own time. I never could find it on any emulator sites, despite
laborious searches.

Love the sneaking around elements, should've put that on my original list!
It could be a bit too action-packed for the relaxing escapism I have in mind
but I'll give it a second look.

It may not be exactly what you want, but BG&E is one of the best games
of this generation, and should definitely be bought and played through
at least once.

Shenmue II. To move you're in an over the shoulder view, but can enter a
first person view. There are no weapons. There are time pressures that
will cause the game to end, but it is months of game time. There are
also daily time limits, but that just causes you to go home and sleep.
It's based in the real world (Hong Kong and Kowloon) in the '80s.
There's tons of exploring the environment. Gamble, buy capsule toys,
race ducks, get a job. Or not. To get access to parts of the game (and
lose access to others), you do have to engage in the game's primary
objectives. But you can take your own sweet time.
And I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!, that Bel didn't mention it.

Shenmue II was the first game I thought of too. Definately worth a look.
Shame that the first game wasn't ported too, but at least you can watch a 15
minute video-clip with ingame graphics about what happened in the first
game, so you won't lose too much of the story at least. Only one of the best
games ever.

In the US, the game comes with Shenmue the Movie, an extended DVD of the
first game that will bring anyone up to full speed on the first game.
Unfortunately, it totally fails to convey the greatness of the game...

I remember that one. That had *a lot* of potential, but we never got past
the first level. We must have tried a hundred times.

Yes. I totally agree. Shenmue I and II are two of the best games I've ever
played. Fantastic atmosphere. I wish a third chapter would be released soon.
