Have been using an old Netgear (2.4 only.) I'd like to keep it around $20 as it's my kid's computer and am going to build a new gaming pc down the road so don't want to put too much more into this one. Only has usb 2.0, gets some lag online mulitplayer, thinking one with 5ghz might be an improvement. And a cable for the antenna like the one in use now too (unless you don't think that matters, the router is about 30ft away with a couple walls in between.) We put the antenna on top of the monitor so it's up higher, seems to work ok for daily use. The internet speed is around 40mbps download & 5mbps upload.

Solution
5GHz doesnt work better than 2.4GHz through walls, for that 2.4GHz is much better
here you can see signal strength between 2.4 and 5GHz, green area on 5gig is much shorter and overaly signal range is shorter

5GHz is ok when devices sees each other, bandwith is much faster than on 2.4Ghz, but it wont help in your case

You have already done the trick of putting the antenna on the top of the machine.

Wifi coverage is impossible to predict because it is how your house is built more than the wifi equipment that causes this. As stated above 5g gets worse coverage than 2.4g but runs faster when you do have coverage.

What I would recommend is to spend more money now and get ready for the gaming computer. Games do not like wifi. If you have coax tv cable in both rooms you can use MoCA. This can get full gigabit speed. Next you would consider powerline networks. The units that have number like 1000 or 2000 can get about 300mbps in many houses.

Both these technology are far superior to wifi for games because they do not get interference as much. Unfortunately both technologies are going to cost you about $100 for a pair of devices.
