Hi I'm looking for recommendations for a capable sound card for audio production and editing output etc, not for gaming and stuff that is not important to me I've seen regular sound a cards start at £100 plus, does the pro / studio / high end options represent and signincantly larger financial commitment.

Any suggestions and options are greatly appreciated, I'm not really interested in 5.1 or 7.1 but I assume that is pretty much standard nowadays. HI def is a must and great resolution! If you get what I mean! Movie audio! Thank you

If you want a high quality sound card I would go for the Asus Essence STX or STX II.

Edit: I'm currently using a Fiio E10K DAC/AMP with a Beyerdynamic DT 770/Sennheiser HD 558 and I'm quite happy with the sound.

Hi I would like to thank you for your suggestion,

I seem to only be able to find to two brands of sound card ASUS and creative Sound labs

What do you mean?

he looks for customer grade sound cards and the only thing that search spits out are asus xonar and/or sound blaster cards. these cards have their strengths and weaknesses. the strength lies in playback, the weakness in recording.

instead of a 'sound card' one should google for 'audio interface' and instead of creative and asus, one should search for m-audio, focusrite, audiotrak, presonus, terratec, rme, roland...
also a good thing is search for trs and xlr as those things may be useful...
but it all depends on the settings...

yes, you're in the right neighborhood, and as far as i can tell that interface is a 10/10 bulls-eye. 😀
but since i really don't know jack about studio audio interfaces (except the fact they do exist), i won't be much of a help here.

Yes, BaconHashtags, I would go over to the Headfi forum and look there for a more informed answer. They have TONS of useful information regarding audio. Thats how I ended up on my Fiio E10K and headphones.

Hi I want the card to do the donkey work for computer audio editing a nice sounding output would be nice but I use a behringer nox 303 mixer which has a USB audio input for listening to music. I would prefer to have a USB output on the card for listening but can't find any, so I guess I would have to output from my audio card to a mixer channel and record from USB and save to my other computer. As you mentioned the audio out is the failing of these cards so, if am doing all the work on my PC I can play back trough my USB to mixer for listening to so that is not a problem.
You do get a small amount of hum using line inputs (Phono) but as I will be doing all the work on the computer and saving it this shouldn't be a problem, I just looking for over all performance.

Frequency range, bit rate, clarity
