I have just purchased a wifi router and want to extend its range outdoors. It has external antennas. Can I simply use an extension cable and connect it to an outdoor wifi antenna and it work?

It is a Netgear R7000. I called Netgear and they so no. I'm skeptical.

Solution
No. Antennas are matched to their transmitters. There are alternate antenna arrangements that can be used, but they typically require specially-constructed bandpass filters and/or other electronics to make them work. Chances are, a ham radio forum would be more able to provide technical details.

But what if he were using the same antennas that come with the router? They would still be "matched" to the transmitters, yes?
Could you not just unscrew the existing antennae, screw in an extension cable, and then screw the same antenna to the end of the appropriate extension, routing the cable outside (to a protected area) or at least an alternate location INSIDE that would more likely cover outdoor areas?
