You always need a modem regardless if it's cable, DSL, or dialup. You need to install a wireless router on the modem or your ISP may have provide a combination modem/wireless router.

the only other way is if you mobile phone supports wifi tethering and you have an appropriate price-plan/contract

I don't recommend this for gaming. You would hit your data cap pretty fast not to mention there will probably be latency problems.
