Hi I am using Windows 10 and have a Belkin Router, my isp provides a pppoe connection to which I can presently connect through the router (and then on the computer through the router with a wired connection) but not when I run the ethernet wire directly to my computer.

I have a spare laptop that connects fine to the same connection directly so the problem must be with my system.

my isp does have mac address filtering and has to release and reset mac address whenever I want to connect with a new device but the router I am using and the system I want to connect to have the same mac adress (I cloned my systems mac adress in the router before connecting to the isp sometime back) so my pc should just connect as soon as I plug in the ethernet wire and create and fill up a pppoe connection

what I have tried so far? troubleshoot problems and diagnose connection in network and sharing center
disabling and enabling my ethernet adapter in device manager
uninstalling and reinstalling my ethernet adapter in device manager

Solution
ok so finally got it to work by going into network and sharing center and going into the properties for the local area connection (or in my case it was ethernet 35 for some reason it had my network adapters name in it so I knew that was the right one) and putting a check next to Microsot Network Adapter Multiplexer Protocol and clicking ok. I got a prompt from windows that if I was sure if I wanted to disable Microsot Network Adapter Multiplexer Protocol and clicked yes. Next when I tried to connect using my pppoe connection it instantly connected.

I dont know how it was enabled in the first place, I may have tinkered with the settings at some previous date I dont know. Regardless now I can connect any time from both my router and...
If I understand this correctly - you have a router/modem from your ISP that is bridged to your personal Belkin router? And you're trying to connect your PC to your Belkin router and for some odd reason both of these devices have the same MAC address. If I'm correct, all you have to do is reset the MAC address on your PC and it will connect. I won't go into details with MAC filtering and tables so I'll just say that you can't have two devices with same MAC addresses connected to the same network at the same time. Especially when one of those devices is a part of the network.

Usually ISP does not limit connections by number of devices. From what i understand, PPPOE is just a dial-in protocol usually using a dsl or adsl modem. Once the modem is connected to the ISP network, the router (which is connected to the modem or the modem is built into the router) can be connected to different devices. So there is no need to clone devices MAC address.

Like Grana said, you can only have 1 device connected at a time if your ISP really does device filtering. If thats the case i would consider changing ISP.

If you have a sepreate modem and router and that modem is in bridge mode (so modem only) then the device you plug into it has to authenticate your PPPoE.

Thus if you dont manually setup a PPPoE connection with your username and pasword in windows network connections it will not work.

Okay I dont have a modem at all. My isp simply provides an ethernet wire. [repeating problem here] Apparently I am able to connect it to the router and then connect to the internet on my pc with a wired connection (ethernet wire>router>ethernet wire>pc) but when I try to bypass the router and connect directly with my computer (plug in the wire directly on my pc create a pppoe connection and dial) I can not connect.

What I meant by the mac address bit is simply that as you have pointed out, my pc and the router both do have the same mac address (I cloned the pc mac address in the router) so the isp is not blocking my connection because I am using a different mac address.

What I have tried so far:- Network diagnostics which resets my local area connection and other connections and network and sharing center
-Also tried the Network Reset option in Windows 10
-whole host of cmd prompt commands like ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, netsh something etc from a microsoft solution page
-disabling the network adapter in device manager and enabling it
-uninstalling and reinstalling network adapter in device manager
-updating the network adapter drivers and/or selecting all available drivers available in device manager

One of these steps should have fixed the problem but I dont know why it just wont work

unfortunately I was foolish enough to pay my isp for a year in advance and so I am stuck with this isp at least for a year. Anyways not allowing multiple devices to connect is not really a big problem these days because now we have routers that can share connections

Also I have clonned the pc's mac address in the router simply because I wanted the option to connect my pc directly whenever I wanted by just plugging the wire from isp (I dont have a modem only an ethernet wire from my isp) into my pc.

that is what I am trying in fact, I have manually setup a connection and filled in the details but it keeps giving me different errors when I try to connect

You cannot NOT have a modem, you may not know of where it is at, but somewhere upstream there is a "modem". I use the quotes because nothing since dialup is technically a modem, dsl/cable/fiber "modems" are media converters in that they convert one medium (dsl/fiber/coax) to ethernet.

So do you have DSL or fiber internet? If you actually dont know that then who is your internet provider and what speeds are you getting?

well I have cable internet dont know if its the same as fiber internet. as I said there's no modem (at least not in my house it maybe be out side of my house or at my isp's local office) regardless as I said, I plug in the wire in my router and I can connect to the internet, I plug in the wire to another computer it works (I just have to call them and they have to do something they call a mac release before I can connect a device with a different mac address)

Ok.

So with cable, you usually need to reboot the modem before changing devices which will clear the mac address and then allow it to accept a new MAC address. So when you call the ISP they are likely just gving the modem a reboot command locally.

The modem must be somewhere on your property, ethernet only has a 300ft max "range", so unless your ISP office is your next door neighbor it would be impossible for them to have it. If you have ethernet ports going to your walls then the modem is likely inside the wiring pannel that all of that goes to.

I dont know how it was enabled in the first place, I may have tinkered with the settings at some previous date I dont know. Regardless now I can connect any time from both my router and directly through the PC. Amazingly this also solved the problem of lag in online games which is the problem I was originally troubleshooting (I wanted to connect directly through the PC so I could find out if the router was the cause of the lag)

I dont know why disabling this setting is allowing me to connect or why it has drastically reduced the lag I was experiencing regardless I am posting the solution here just in case any one else might have a similar problem.
