As the post says, I am looking into buying a third monitor. I currently have EVGA 4gb gtx 970 SLI running two 1920x1080 monitors. Could I run a 1440p monitor along with my two current ones or should I just stick to the same model I have?

What are you trying to do? Do you want to game on the 1440p and have the other 2 for webpages/movies etc up? Because yeah this is fine. Or are you trying to game in surround on all 3 at once? If so you are going to have some complications using mixed resolutions. Usually it will force the 1440p into 1080p for surround, but some people have reported finding ways around this, I don't have enough knowledge on that.

I'm most likely going to do the first thing you described. the 1440p for gaming and the other 2 for extra work and stuff. Will the games run well like this? high settings @60fps? The surround sounds cool but doesnt seem practical to me at this point. I was looking at the acer g257hu smidpx 25-inch wqhd monitor since it doesnt break the bank. I have 2 of the acer h236hl right now.

Yeah SLI GTX 970s will run games in 1440p at very respectable framerates. The FPS and settings will vary wildly from game to game, as some games have poor or no SLI scaling. You'll have to look for specific reviews (from reputable sources) and see if the games you are most interested in have been benchmarked. This review has quite a few games but most are a few years old: https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-970-sli-review,1.html
