Can HDMI run 144hz?

So im currently waiting on a 144HZ monitor to arrive soon, and a good friend of mine has just asked me, so i have a dvi cable for it, as hdmi cannot handle 144hz it is capped at 60? he said i could also use a display port, the monitor has 2 hdmi and 1 display port so would hdmi work, or would i have to buy a display port lead?

you should always use the displayport or the dual dvi-d cables for 144Hz monitors.

Which monitor did you buy?

The monitor has to be able to support 144hz over HDMI, not just your GPU and cable.

In the end, it would be better to buy a DisplayPort cable to guarantee that you'd be able to use your monitor to its fullest.

No, you need a display port cable.

If i plugged a HDMI into my 1440p 144hz Gysnc screen i would lose Gsync and it would cap to 60hz due to the data transfer limit.

see until today i always thought hdmi was the best connection and always wondered ever since i got my pc what them hdmi looking ports were, silly me, ill pick up a display port cable then! thanks guys
