Can high temps cause a hard lock up?

I experienced my first ever hard lock up yesterday. I'm obviously not too sure on what the cause is but I have my suspicions. Even though it was during a fairly old game (about a 2 hour session into F.E.A.R so my hardware is well up to snuff to run a game fine from '05), the room my PC in is usually quite a warm/hot environment and thanks to the weather here, that has been increased. I had played more graphical intensive stuff during the day though without issue.

The reason why I'm leaning towards it being temp related even though I have yet to do a proper test is because when I had to reboot it, it revved far harder than usual, and I have noticed on some days over the past few weeks on a new day boot up, the revving has been a little more aggressive compared to others.

So basically before I get round to running some diagnostics, I wanted to know if lock ups could occur because of too high a temperature on components.

Did dust build up in your PC? Did you change CPU thermal paste since you bought it?

Comp was cleaned out a few months back. Haven't changed the thermal paste. How often is that recommended?

Well now is the time. I change mine every 6 months, but it can last a lot longer. So do change the thermal paste and see how it goes.

install msi afterburner and ACTUALLY monitor temps while playing

this will tell you all you need to know
