Can I activate a game on steam from a physical copy, which I already own in my library, but a different edition?

hello,
I want to get Skyrim Legendary Edition but i already own vanilla skyrim. The dlc's are worth 30euro in the steam store and the whole legendary edition, 15euro in my local games shop. Will steam just upgrade skyrim in my library to the Legendary edition, or ?

Are you saying if you buy it in the store will it activate on Steam? If so then yes it will after you install it, it may even have a code in the box for steam.

if you can activate Skyrim on Steam, it will be the same version(plain vanilla) that you have.

I own the base game on steam, but i want to get the legendary edition so i can upgrade to the special edition later on and start the game all over. However i don't want to spend 30euro on the legendary upgrade in steam, when i can just buy a new legendary edition for 15euro cheaper from the local store. Will steam give me a hard time for already owning the base game?

No not at all, it should just add it to your account either by installing the game from the media you buy, or if a code is included in the box.

It's possible you'll also get a "vanilla skyrim" key as a "gift" as well since you already have vanilla skyrim.
