Hello guys! :)

There is a PC I've seen that is relatively cheap that I want to buy, which is the HP Elitedesk 800 G2.

The specs for it is;

CPU: i5-6500 SSD: 240GB (I want to upgrade to Samsung SSD Evo 1TB)
RAM: 16GB RAM, 2400 Mhz
GPU: None (if you don't count the Intel HD), but I have a GTX 1050 Ti Low profile that I want to add and use.

Now since this doesn't have a lot of PSU, i think it's either 200W or 240W, is it possible to buy a Samsung 1TB Evo (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MZ-76E1T0B-EU-Solid-State/dp/B078WST5RK)

And add a GTX 1050 Ti Low Profile, 4GB (https://www.newegg.com/amp/msi-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-gtx-1050-ti-4gt-lp/p/N82E16814137081)

Or won't this PC handle it? :)

I've seen that other people writes that their HP Elitedesk 800 G1 handles the 1050 ti just fine, but I want to ask if this also works for the G2 version, just in case :)

Solution
Reading the newer post from you. YES buy a larger model / PSU. You can also then NOT buy a low profile card as they are generally louder (smaller fans have to spin faster).

For what it's worth, this person did what you are proposing, it would be interesting to know if the system has survived.

For anyone who might still be interested I actually took the plunge and bought a Gigabyte GTX1050 Ti and installed it into an EliteDesk 800 G2 SFF. It works perfectly with the stock PSU that comes with the computer - as it's a low profile card...
Given that it’s a 75 watt GPU and that your CPU is about 65 watts in total that’s 140. But it could be cutting close to around 160-180 that’s if you include the other components in that pc. So it should be okay since I’ve done research as well and most say it should be fine.

Thank you very much for the reply and that you took your time to look! :)

I was actually surprised that the G2 only had 200W, whereas the G1 have 240W. The older version have 40W more than the upgraded one :/

And yeah, the RAM is going to be untouched since it already have 16GB, I'm only going to add 105Ti and that 1TB SSD... BUT let say that it isn't enough PSU, what will happen if I boot it up? :)

I’m guessing the newer version is more efficient. I would say it might be risky since it’s cutting it close I thought you might have that extra 40 watts. As said above it might not turn on, and even if it does putting it under load will go over the psu’s limit.

Most probably will not boot up. There are other possibilities, catastrophic ones actually but those are far less frequent and usually under load.
Wow then in that case I won't buy it :O
If it only had 40W extra 🙁

Even though it might be more efficient, I still don't think I'm going to buy it anymore 🙁
I think I have to look for a Elitedesk 800 G1 instead since that one have 240W... Or find other SFF computer with somewhat good CPU and PSU 🙁

It's just strange that this one somehow worked with GTX 1650, 16GB RAM 256GB SSD AND a 1TB HDD :/
This one from Amazon is also a G2 :/

Replacing the spinning disk with an SSD will save a couple watts. It might boot ok with 200 watts, but I would be concerned that under load the PSU would be stressed. There's also the problem of heat management in that little case.

If you really wanted to go this route, you could pick up an extra PSU (modular) and wire up a switch to power a 1050 TI (low profile) with a 6 pin. (dodgy)

This is interesting:
HP EliteDesk 800 G2 Small Form Factor Product Specifications
https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c04802690

They list a 730 GT and a 960 GTX? (The GTX draws more than the 1050 TI? - it even says it needs 400W in the document?)

The 730 draws 49 watts and a 1050 75 watts, you'd only be pulling 25 more watts. actually.

Ok, last point, there is a 400 watt 'HP' supply, but it's for the larger form factors. I don't think after-market PSUs will connect properly.

It works perfectly with the stock PSU that comes with the computer - as it's a low profile card additional ATX connectors are not required, it gets all its power from the PCIE bus. I've also had it running for considerable periods of time at full tilt with no stability issues and my CPU is the i7 6700.

Would it better if I add a regular HDD instead? I thought that one hard drive would "help" the PSU usage instead of using both SSD and HDD, since many Elitedesk is that way. Some uses 120GB SSD and 500GB to 1TB HDD.

I'm more surprised about this one from eBay. The seller managed to add all the upgrades I almost wanted, and he/she still used a 200W according to the description :/
What gives?

I do know that if I write to that person he/she might not even answer 🙁
And about the loud profile card. The 1050ti I'm using right now isn't that loud. I barely hear it even though it's on the desk side with my screen.

I think it would be a better option. the 40 additional watts would cover the delta of 25 watts (730GT vs 1050 TI GTX). Best would be to get a larger (micro or mini tower.) BTW, I know HP make good products, but their power supplies are proprietary. If you ever need to replace it, you need to buy another HP supply or the adapter. What about other brands (ACER / DELL / ???)
