Socket PGA988 compatible CPUs... As you can see in the chart, the most you could improve on CPU performance would be less than 20%.

In my opinion, 20% is not worth the expense... you could get a used item such as those included in this page, but I don't think the marginal improvement or added TDP temp risk would be worth $50-$80

Correction: Those CPUs priced from $50 to $80 are new.. used ones are priced much lower... TDP compatibility is all good as long as you stick to the models included in...
Possibly, but I don't think you'll get a CPU that's significantly faster, so it probably won't be worth your time. An i5 or i7 will have a little extra clockspeed, but I would not drop in a CPU with a higher TDP or you'll risk overheating and throttling.

The PGA988A CPU socket doesn't have many options or significant CPU improvements. It would probably benefit more with 8GB of RAM (4GBx2) and a SSD or at least a SSHD (hibrid drive).

The processor is removable in that motherboard, so yes you could upgrade it. That said, computer stores do not sell laptop processors, so aside from buying used it would be tough to get a replacement. The other issue is many times the board is limited to certain processors that were available for it, so while a processor may fit, it may not work. Could be a gamble.
