This may seem like dumb question to many of you but I'm really bad at networking and I'm pretty confused on how this whole system works. I'm trying to add a new router to my house to advance signal strength. My current router is a router modem combo that doesn't seem to have any extra ports open for use. I want to preferably not replace my current router, but add the new router for an alternate network with better performance and just let guests use the normal one. Is this possible with my type of router/modem? I'm sure it's possible with a separate modem. Just not with the combo. Thanks for any help you can give me

You can, but you most probably won't be happy with the results, especially if you are gamer (by cascading the two). You can configure your new router as access point only, by disabling it's routing functions.

The best would be to try to put your existing router in "bridge mode", where it will acts as a modem only, and use your new router as your primary. Separating guests is easy since most modern routers have "guest WiFi network" completely isolated from the primary one.
