It seems some freak a little to much about the danger of where to build a computer. I have a large 9x4 glass table in my office. Would this be a good area to build my computer? If not, I have a 5X2 desk that is particle board and glass as the top. Thanks, TheWhighet

the surface material doesnt matter.

it can be wood, metal, glass, cloth, anything.

just make sure you touch your case to eliminate static discharge every single time before you touch components or wear a wrist strap with ground and you will be fine.

personally i like assembling mine on a bathroom towel on top of a desk so i dont scratch my case to hell.

NEVER put your components on their anti-static bags because while they're discharged when inside, this charge is transferred to the outside, so that will actually do more harm than good. You're better off with putting your motherboard on its box and start working from there.

That's really just rubbish.

Electrostatic protection bags are (slightly) conductive, and thus equalize the charge. This is the whole point of them, and almost all the other ESD protection you have. They're also made with materials that have as little charge-storing capacity as possible so that they don't hold a lot of charge to equalize.

You're trying to get everything (including your slightly conductive body) at the same voltage level (usually, but not necessarily, ground).

Putting a GPU or other device on its bag is perfectly safe.
