I wanted to know what surface is fine to build on for the pc? Is hardwood fine? Or vinyl? Granite? Even a wood table? Cardboard? I have the s340 elite. Should i touch its metal side panel to discharge electricity every few minutes?

Solution
A hardwood floor, vinyl, granite or wood tables are all appropriate surfaces to build on.

Depending on the climate in your location, ESD can be a greater (or lesser) hazard than other areas.

A PSU, connected to an grounded outlet (but off!) is sufficient to ground you by touching a bare metal area.

Overall, ESD is not *that* risky; provided you use common sense.

Wood, vinyl, or granite would be fine. I have built many a PC on wood and vinyl. If you are worried about ESD use an ESD wrist strap and don't build on carpet flooring. I never have or witnessed someone damage PC hardware witch static electricity, even when they don't take any precautions against it.
