Can I buy a better graphics card to play fortnite on an old PC?

So, I’ve always been a console video game player, but I’ve recently become interested in PC gaming. Unfortunately, the only computer I have is a really old one, I believe from 2009, and I can’t afford to buy a good gaming PC. The graphics card is very bad and obviously games run terribly on the computer. So my question is, can you just buy a better graphics card for an old PC like mine to run games well (Specifically Fortnite), or would I have to get a whole new gaming computer?

For a game like Fortnite, unfortunately adding a better graphics card wouldn't be enough as it requires a decent CPU too. Yes it might be able to run the game, but every time you there is a lot happening, the game would stutter and run so slow it would be a nightmare to play.

You'd have to tell us more than that it's an old PC. Specific specs are required to really give more than the vaguest answer.
