Hi,

I am fairly new to graphics cards. I am planning to buy a GTX 1070 to do deep learning. But I am not sure whether it works on my machine.

Here is my desktop PC information:

Model: Dell Preicision T3500
Power: 500W
CPU: Intel Xeon W3565 (4 cores)
Memory: 12GB
PCI: support for 2 PCI Express x16 Gen 2 graphics card

Will GTX 1070 work on my machine?

Thanks!

For deep learning, we usually use GPU for parallel processing to speed up the model training process. What I am concerned is that the PC is a little out-dated while GTX 1070 is the most recent top GPU. Will the PC drag the GPU performance down?

That PC will drag down GPU performance, and as well it may not even work due to the older BIOS. Many older Dells and HPs have issues with Nvidia 9xx and 10xx series hardware due to the lack of legacy BIOS support in the card.

If you buy this GPU make sure its from a store with a good return policy because there is a chance it won't even work.

Hi Rogue, thanks for your advice!

I've had problems with newer AMD cards on old Dells but haven't heard of any issues with Nvidia. Bambiboom runs these things he might know. Dell did adopt EUFI BIOS fairly early on so you might be OK there. I would research that issue though. My Sapphire R9- 285/380 had a dual BIOS switch and could run either way. ( It had another issue with the BIOS screen resolution). There may be Nvidia cards with that feature. You need to realize that you are probably the first one to try this. If you do this please post your results back here so we can help others. Also it's the sort of thing I would like to try myself.

Thanks, William. I am planning to buy GTX 1070 and try it on my Dell desktop. I will post back here after I try it.

I have a Dell t3500(e5640, 4C/8T 2.66Ghz)
Been using it with a gtx 970 since Sept last year, upgraded to a gtx 1070 and it was clearly bottlenecked in games, while the GTX 970 was more or less fine, just put a w3580 in and the bottleneck is mostly gone. The Dell t3500 is one of the best budget gaming rigs you can get because use can get a whole system with 12GB of ram(if your lucky 24GB) for under 120$ and a CPU upgrade is only 10-30$ plus the fact it comes with a 850W PSU means it's easy to stick in any gpu. Also the T3500 has ufie support as far as I can tell, and makes a decent hackintosh(running MacOS 12.2.2 currently latest version)
