I work in a small office (4 staff). At the moment there is a database set up on one machine. There is no server. If I brought one server into the equation, would it be sufficient to meet file, print and database sharing needs?

Typically database server need a lot of resources and are kept on a dedicated box. But since you are in a very small environment, I don't see anything wrong with have all of you services on one box. You should consider how fast the hardware in the server is and future growth of the business.

If you really wanted to keep the them separate you could consider running the database and the other services as separate virtual machines on the one box.
