Can I combine two sets of identical RAM at separate times?

I want to know if I can expand my 8gb (2x4gb modules) of G. Skill Ripjaws 1600mhz, by adding 8gb more of the exact same set. I keep reading that I can't, and i keep reading that i can. I want to know for sure what my chances of it working right are.

Not the best way to do it and it may cause you problems. But best case is it will work fine just at the lowest timings
