Can I connect a turntable to a dvd and hear music from the LP/

Hello,
I am electronically challenged, so I need help. I am trying to connect a turntable to a dvd player. I get no sound through my speakers. Is it POSSIBLE get sound through my dvd speakers?

I am assuming that by DVD player speakers you have a home theater in a box which has the DVD built in. You would need a Left and Right analog rca input on it and a turntable which has a built in phono preamp.
