Can I copy a laptop OS to a desktop?

I have a laptop that has Windows 8.1 already on it (I updated from Windows 8), but I want to buy a desktop and want to save some money by not buying a CD to install the OS from.

Can I copy an OS from this laptop onto the desktop?
And if so, how big of a USB would I need? (If it is too big I would just go ahead and buy the OS)

Also, here are some other questions in mind:
1. Would all the data from that laptop be wiped?
2. Would everything be compatible? (Since it is 2 different systems)
3. If I were to backup my files onto another hard drive how long would it take.
4. Can Windows 8.1 be upgraded to Windows 10 (When it comes out) free of charge?

No, you need to buy a copy of Windows for the desktop, plain and simple.

you can use Norton Gost to do so
it makes an image of the os and all programs that already installed

I think you can. Download the windows version for license key and then try entering the license on the laptop.
