Can I crossfire 2 of the same cards if they are a different type?

I currently have one R9 280X but it is a Asus Matrix Platinum version of the card and I was thinking of getting another on in crossfire but I don't have enough room on my Motherboard because I have a wireless card as well. So i was thinking of getting another Asus one that only takes up 2 pcie slots but obviously it would not be a matrix platinum version so i wondered if I could crossfire them. I would overclock the second one to the same speed as well.

Sorry for the noobish post but i am really not sure and thanks for any help.

You can get the same card, but it could be different brands as well, that is not a problem, the xFire will work if you are getting a R9 280x as the 2nd card. You can OC the 2nd card to match the primary one or you can deboost the clock rate of the primary to make it work with 2nd GPU
