I have a self assembled desktop pc with a single core CPU( AMD Skt AM3) in an Asus m4n68tm le v2 mobo . This is very old now, and needs a slight boost to prevent bouts of 100percent cpu usage when playing or editing video. Will I need to make any alterations to the motherboard other than possibly resetting the cmos back to factory when a multi core cpu is fitted?

Any benefit to more than say 4 cores?

(Win 7 OS installed. Using only the on-board graphics chip).

Your mobo has multi-core support. The benefit of 4+ cores depends on the software you use, but I would always recommend getting as many cores as possible when it comes to AMD because single-threaded performance is not their strong point. Most video-editing software is heavily multi-core optimised nowadays.

Thanks for the reply, I'll go for a 6 core then.
Do I need to make any alteration to the settings in the BIOS or Motherboard prior to fitting the multi-core CPU, or will it take care of itself?

Many thanks for your helpful information. I can now go ahead with some confidence to eeek a few more years out of my old PC before upgrading further.
