Can I force a shutdown in power management?

It can't be done from Power Management settings in Windows 7 but is there a registry hack that can make the computer do a full shut down rather than making the computer go to sleep from a power management plan?

thanks, those are two nice tricks - shorten the time out on forcing programs to close and creating a fast shutdown desktop shortcut.

what I actually want to happen is that when a power management profile puts the computer to sleep, I want it to shut the computer down instead.

it's ok if that's simply not possible.

Since you have access to a computer, I would recommend downloading a copy of Windows 8 and attempting a repair installation. I can't tell you where to find one, but you should know, you are a college student.
I'm assuming you didn't make recovery media with your computer. You could see if people on your floor/friends have a copy of Windows 8 from the same manufacturer who made your computer (if your computer is a Dell, barrow Dell disks). If you find disks, attempt a repair installation.

Good luck.
