Can I get an IDE Hard drive to work with a IDE Disc Drive on the same ribbon cable?

I have tryed it on 3 systems, When I only have one of the 2 devices on the one ribbon cable, It come up in the BIOS, When I have both plugged in, None show up and cannot be booted from. I have started building computers with old, leftover parts just for the hell of it, and have not really messed around with IDE cables before. I am trying to use a 500GB Samsung IDE Hard drive and an old Compaq IDE Disc tray

The computers only have one IDE port each and all do have SATA ports

Yes. The old IDE drives have jumper pins at the rear, next to the power and data connection ports. Make sure, as runswindows95 states, that the hard drive is set to "Master" and the disc drive is set to "Slave". If you're not sure how to set those, you'll need to find the jumper settings document/image for that particular drive. You may be able to find it using the serial number of the drive.
