Can I get maximum resolution on my 24" monitor?

Hello.

I plan on getting a 24" LCD monitor. The maximum resolution on the monitor is 1920x1200.

I have the BFG 8800GTS 640 OC2 graphics card. On the BFG site in the FAQ section it says that the maximum resolution for the DVI output is 1600x1200.

Does this mean that I won't be able to use my monitor at 1920x1200 if I use a DVI connection?

When I go to stores like Best Buy and look at their 24" monitors their resolution is always set at 1920x1200 and I'm sure my graphics card is better than the ones they're using.

Someone care to explain what I'm missing here? Thanks.
 
Are you sure that faq refers to your card? Probably not because 16x12 max is for single link DVI (older cards). Yours should have two dual link DVI outs capable of 25x16 each.
 
You won't have any problem running that resolution with that card. Much older and slower cards are capable of running at 1920x1200, you'll be fine.
 
Thanks to all for the help. Yes, my graphics card does have 2 output ports. I thought the FAQ on the BFG site was for all cards. I guess some cards work differently?
 


OK....thanks for the info. Since we're partly on the subject, there's a new 25.5" monitor that came out. I'm thinking about going with that over the 24". Any thoughts?


 



Thanks. I'll look into those. But I'm here in Canada so the prices are quite a bit higher. And I'm not sure if our Costco carries those monitors.
 
I've got two monitors running on an Nvidia 7900GTX. The 19 inch monitor runs at 1280 by 1024, and the 24 inch is running at 1920 by 1200. I've got them set to display separately so I can have one application on one screen and a different app on the other.

Those are the max resolutions for each of the monitors. They could each run less than that. Your video card should be capable of much higher resolution, but unless you tell it to, Windows will usually display only those resolutions and refresh rates that your display can run.

My 7900GTX has dual DVI out, so hooking them up was easy. The 24 inch is new, and has multiple inlets. I've got a Comcast HD box hooked up to it's HDMI input, so when I want, I can watch 1080p HD television on it while working on the other.
 


Are you referring to the Samsung 2693HM by any chance? I got all excited about that one recently but decided against it after doing some research. It's using a cheap panel, similar to the 245BW. Good for games, but the image quality and viewing angles (160 degrees) are less than I'd expect for $650. I'm waiting for the Samsung 275T to go on sale.

Yes. That is the one I'm talking about. Saw it at Future Shop. Looked good enough. Guess I'll do some more research. They also have a 24" one too.

I have a 24" monitor and the 8800GTS 640MB. Everything runs fine so far except Crysis which gets 11fps (E6600 CPU, 4GB RAM).

24" is a good size for 1920x1200 because it is 96dpi so fonts are nice and big. If you like oversized text, then a larger monitor will give better results than adjusting the DPI settings in Windows in my experience. Note when you get to 30" the resolution jumps to 2560x1600.

Yes, I saw the ACER as well. However, it didn't have height control which is something I would like. Not sure if the ACER brand name is better or worse than Samsung. Do you have the ACER. And I did see the ACER 25.5" one as well.



 
In general Samsung is considered a better brand. Between these two monitors though I think the Acer sounds better indeed. It's cheaper, and the horizontal viewing angle is better (170 degrees). You can get more details from Newegg than from Future Shop, by the way.

I'm just not sure exactly how you'd connect that 8800GTS to the Acer monitor. It's possible with a DVI-VGA adapter (provided with the video card) but that would convert the image to analog and lose quality. Or you could buy a DVI-HDMI adapter ($5 at newegg, should be about the same in Canada). The Samsung knows DVI already and even comes with the DVI cable.

I also have Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 and the maximum resolution out of the DVI connector is LESS than 1920x1200 so my Dell 2408WFP has to scale the image - very annoying meaning what I see on my 24" is part of the desktop and as I move the mouse past the monitor physical limit the image moves in the direction of the mouse revealing more desktop real estate. The monitor money reports the resolution as being 1600x1200 so the missing 1920-1600=320 pixels are presented only when you move the mouse to the boundary of the monitor and then the video card automatically scales the image by shifting what you see to the left or right depending on which side of the monitor you hit with the mouse - totally strange!

On the VGA connector however the video card does put out 1920x1200 and that shows up just fine on my 24" monitor.

What the heck is wrong with my setup. Yes, new drivers were installed, swapped several DVI cables, swapped monitors too (have another NEC 24") - I get the same exact problem using DVI and no problems at all using VGA!

Hmmm...that is strange. I have the Samsung 2443BW monitor with an Nvidia 8800GTS and I'm running a digital signal instead of analog and I'm able to max out on my resolution setting at 1920x1200.

 
Nothing strange about it, max resolution for the FX5200 when run thru DVI is 1600 x 1200.

Where did you see that spec, I have been looking on their site to cover the basics since I did think of that but I could not find anything hence I assumed that if VGA does wide resolution so should DVI

I suppose that was an incorrect assumption...
