Recently I read somewhere that HP Printers have one of the highest cost of replacement ink cartridges existing. I need to buy my wife a printer. the one she has died just before I built her current PC and that was three years ago. I, myself, have an HP all-in-one printer, scanner and copier. We also have a Verizon FIOS web provider and their router, but I am not sure if I can make the web LAN share the existing printer. Any suggestions for which new printer to get or how to set up sharing my printer would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.

With a a non-wireless printer, it has to be linked by USB to one of the networked computers which then has to have printer sharing enabled, so that the other boxes in the network can send documents to it.

Which OS - version of Windows - are each of you using?

Saga Lout:
Win XP ver 3 w/ all bells & whistles. Not in a hurry, since wife's PC is in the shop for a virus removal. She got one that erases her Windows and Email particulars and also takes nearly 20 minutes to boot to the Welcome screen. Nasty SOB. Kaspersky & AVG would not touch it.

Simple in good old XP. In the machine connected to the printer, you go from Start to Printers and Faxes, find the printer and right click to go to Properties. Click the Sharing tab and tick to share it. Assuming files and printers are set to be shared in the network setup, the remote sharer won't need any setting up except to find the printer in the network and create a shortcut to it.

Aside note on the virus front - if AVG and Kaspersky are both installed, they could both overlook a threat if each assumes it's looking ion the other's definitions files. Either of those are good (MSE if better and free) but two is one too many.

Oh Wise Saga Lout (I refuse to call you by your last name[giggle]):
Thanks for both information dumps. My wife's PC is at the local IT Genius' shop for the removal of the vicious virus. Hopefully the patient will survive w/o a major re-format. And now she plays Runescape on my PC (Oh, the shame! I think CFS 3 will disown me) I will take your advice about the printer. Hopefully I can accomplish the task w/o fumble fingering it (I still type with 2 fingers and the occasional thumb).

Just off of the M1. eh? Google Earth has such wonderful colour. Cheerio, and thanks again for the advice. Go Great Britain! We Yanks are currently SUFFERING through the Pre-Presidential campaign rhetoric. It's just too bad that when we over threw King George that we did not copy your Parliamentary form of government. Vote of Confidence and throw the bastards out. Then 2 months of campaigning and voila', a new PM. Instead, we must endure 2 years of bovine excremental (BE) rhetoric and all of the platitudes the US Politics is heir to. By the by, when I retire from California State service, I'm moving to Canada to get away from all of the BE.
