Ok I got a pirated copy of Win2k but since I plan to do business with this comp I'd like to cover my arse, so I bought an OEM copy. My question is, can I somehow change the serial number on my currently install version without having to reinstall and reconfigure everything??

in regedit you could try changing the product id, follow this path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
but i would say don't sweat it. if you're working for yourself, keep the key close, and next time you feel like reformatting use the legit one. i do own my software, but i have to say it is sorta funny to use a [k] version of something and have it run better than the real one.

This sounds like a reasonable solution. <A HREF="http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?DepartmentID=785" target="_new">Check this out</A>.

for the most part microsoft is concerned with matching each installation with a product id and license. they dont care if the id number in your registry doesnt match the one you bought. its all about profit, my friend. they just wanna know you paid your dues. thats it. dont sweat it.

ignore everything i say

ya, well i bought windows ME for my kid sis about 6 months ago, so i think i've given MS more than enough money ;P
