Can I handle an ASUS PG278Q? Or do I need to go with something like an Acer XB270H?

I heard Linus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdqTIfNv2DE) say that you could run the ASUS with "at least a gtx 770 for medium settings on modern games, or at least one gtx 780, for high in modern games."

However, it seems like everyone attempting to use this monitor is planning on running SLI. My GPU appears to have been discontinued...

Currently using a ASUS VW266H Black 25.5" 2ms 1920x1200 TN Panel that I actually love to death (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236047).

Really want a monitor upgrade, and I would like it to include G-SYNC.

Thanks for the help!

Solution
Your build is really good and looking at the monitor you want it is ok to get them based on your specs. The 780ti will give you around 60fps in demanding games. If you want great graphics and higher fps then I'd add a second 780ti. That will crush all games and you'll probably get around 100fps in high end games.

Both monitors look great. [strike]I don't know why I see all the talk about the Asus ROG. That Acer is priced less and I can't comment whether the Asus is $200 better. [/strike] I'd rather the Asus monitor as it has higher resolution and the 780ti can run at least 60fps on it.

The thing is the 780ti is somewhere between the 970 and 980. If the 780ti is selling for high price, $600. Then I'd just sell off the 780ti and buy 2x970. The 970 sells for $330 and 2x970 = $660. Selling the 780ti must get at least $300. So I'd feel like I would be spending $300 and now I could run at 80+fps. Just giving you that option.

Try here: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/

Whoa, I just looked at your credentials.
Guess I can take your word for it.

And heck, I'm used to running 60fps anyways, since I'm capped at that currently.
As long as I can run heavily modded Skyrim (and other demanding games) on the ASUS ROG and maintain ~60fps, I'm going to be in heaven.

Thanks envy14tpe!!

Was just saying that exact combination to my friend on Steam while you were posting. 😀
If I need to I can dump the 780ti and get 2x970's.

But as long as the 780 ti's on Amazon are still available in 2 weeks, shouldn't I just go for the dual 780ti's vs. the dual 970's?
Pay the $520 for a stronger build vs. $360 with the trouble of reselling the 780 ti?

I like to use benchmarks to find out where the components really lies. I found a benchmark with a 970 : Skyrim 1440p. Check this out: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/09/19/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-review/9
It says to me that a 970 will pull 110fps as an average. I would guess that the 780ti would be somewhere close to that. So, given that game as a comparison then I would keep the 780ti and get the monitor. What I know about Skyrim is that it focuses more on visual wow rather than speed. I mean it isn't like BF4 which is a fast action shooter game. If so, then I I would probably look for a IPS rather than TN panel. IPS panels look much better but the response time isn't as fast as TN panels. Did you consider getting a IPS panel monitor? You might be able to get one with even higher resolution than 1440p for about the same price.

Wow, those benchmarks are really encouraging.
You were right and it seems the 780ti tends to score just above the 970's.

Too bad the 780ti is missing from the 2560x1440 runs, however I see it still held down a 56 fps minimum at 3,840 x 2,160.
That's impressive!

So I think I'll be good for this monitor then.
I'm just hoping ASUS has taken care of the "QC Issues" I keep reading about online.
Tons of these ROG's are showing up with dead pixels and burning out within a month or two (Yikes).

I have considered IPS panels, but I'm not so concerned about color accuracy as I am input lag when I do play games like BF4, Planetside 2, Overwatch (future desire), etc.

I found 780ti with an even higher resolution monitor at it got 117fps and it is DirectX9. So wit DX11 I'd expect improvements. I really wouldn't recommend upgrading for Skyrim.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2013/11/07/nvidia-gtx-780-ti-3gb-review/8
With that said. If you do play games like BF4 then you might need to upgrade. You can see the 780ti drops to 45fps.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2013/11/07/nvidia-gtx-780-ti-3gb-review/5

So what to do about GPU: I'd try to sell the 780ti and see how much I can get. If it is decent then do so and get 2x970. If not then see how much you can get buy a 780ti for.

Monitor: Since you do like BF4 then TN might be better. But you should know that Acer is going to release some new monitors and one that will compete with the Asus 27" ROG monitor. So, prices could drop. If possible wait a couple weeks to see the impact. Acer is very close to making price available since basic specs are already out.

Ouch, that is a pretty bad fps drop at that resolution for BF4.
Skyrim is still my pride and joy but I have to future proof my purchase.

I do play a lot of fast action FPS's, as well as brand new top of the line games, so I need to stay ahead of the curve.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll see the Acer answer to the Swif ROG until March.
http://www.pcgamer.com/acer-unveil-super-quick-144hz-g-sync-ips-monitor/

I don't think I can wait that long... this money is burning a hole in my pocket. 😀
However, all these Quality Control issues with the ROG are scaring me.
Maybe I will wait awhile until the reviews online show general improvement and the prices come down (when Acer announces prices on their XB270HU, maybe?).

Anyways, I feel a lot more informed and educated on this decision now.

Thanks again envy14tpe!!
You've been fantastic!

Bought a 780 ti classy last night from a highly reviewed seller on Amazon for $520.
Gonna get all SLI'd up and then see where the monitors are at in about 2 weeks.

The more I think about it though, the Acer XB270HU is calling to me.
Just discovered that despite being almost identical to the ASUS PG278Q, it's also an IPS panel!!
Maybe I should wait so I can have my cake and eat it too.
That color reproduction... crazy!

Maybe two monitors. One fast for BF4 and the other for beautiful colors for Skyrim.

Got the used 780 ti off Amazon, and it's identical except that the fan occasionally makes a strange noise for about 10 sec at very long intervals (days). Not too worried about that because I do plan to water cool this all in the future. That will be the final upgrade. :)

Anyways, SLI has been running great, but pretty much pointless at a 60 Hz capped monitor. Now the ROG Swift is on it's way!

Thanks!!

780ti SLI ...drool. Here is a review of that monitor:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/asus_rog_swift_pg278q.htm

Maybe not needed since you already bought one, but it'll make you feel great about your choice. The review says that monitor is awesome!
