Can i install 2x2GB and 1x8GB of ram ?

i have 4 ram slots in which 2x2GB are occupied. can I add another 8GB ram, so as to get 12GB of ram ?

You can try but we need to know what Motherboard you have.Also you can run in a compatibilty issue by adding a different type of RAM

2x2 kits were popular back on the ddr2 days, so check your motherboard model and what ram it supports. currently most 8gb modules are ddr3 (NOT backwards compatible in ddr2 motherboards)

You can try to add the 8 Gb memory stick and see if it works. If it's crashing then stick with your 4Gb of RAM

or better yet, stick to the 8gb module so you have more ram. alone it should work without any issues.

Your motherboard/CPU is most has a dual channel memory configuration. They tend to do best with matching pairs of memory. CPU's do support non matching pairs but tend to be slower and can have compatibility and stability issues. If you really want tons of ram I would get 2X8GB sticks. You might be able to still run the 2X2GB sticks as well for 20GB of ram depending on your CPU/Motherboard worse case you just use the 2X8GB. Some cpu's lower the memory speed when running 4 memory sticks so we really need system details to make a more informed recommendation.
