[SOLVED] Can I install a Core i5 9400 in a Dell optiplex 7040?

Hi everyone, I'm in the market for a new PC and don't have much of a budget, I already have a gpu so I just need a computer, I settled on a Dell Optiplex 7040 and it already comes with a. Core i5 6500 which I want to replace with a core i5 9400? Does anyone know of any compatibility issues that might arrise? Here is the exact PC, https://a.co/d/88fS7rg

Those 2 processors use the same socket (1151) so you may have a chance, possibly with a BIOS update?

But generally, I'd hate to see anyone buy a used PC sight unseen unless you have serious insight into the seller (Greentoptech, whoever that is).

The chipset on the board will not accept the processor you're looking to drop in as an upgrade, simple answer, no. To corroborate my answer, read through the specs to your prebuilt here;

The chipset for the motherboard is a Q170.

To clarify:

LGA1151
6th and 7th generation Intel
Z170, Z270, H170, H270, H110, B150, B250, Q170, Q270

LGA1151v2 (though not labeled as such, it should be)
8th and 9th generation Intel
Z370, Z390, H310, H370, B360, B365, Q370

But that applies to consumer motherboards. OEM motherboards tend to have more restrictions and fewer BIOS updates.

Best case, you could install an i7-6700 for a little more performance, but at that point you should seek out one that already has that chip installed rather than going to the expense of swapping out an i5.

Just as another helpful pointer....

I know the YT channels love to push this upgrade an Optiplex thing. They often leave out important details regarding things such as the proprietary PSU actually working with said, BIOS locked motherboards that only allow a small number of factory option cards, room inside the case, and so on.

There are a lot of really sharp posters here that accel at build lists. Might be worthwhile to post a thread with budget and desire to see if something can be built to accommodate.
