Can I install a CPU cooler bracket before installing the CPU?

Title says it all. I will be installing the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo on a MSI Pro Series Intel Z270 SLI Plus. I want to know if I can install the bracket before installing the cpu so I dont accidentally touch the top of the cpu. I dont see why I couldnt, but every dang install guide always has the cpu install as the first step or already has it installed.

you can certainly install the back mounting plate bracket long before the cpu if you so choose...

Thank you! Why is there this preconceived notion to always install cpu first...

Probably because when you buy an aftermarket cooler, it is assumed you are replacing the CPU's stock cooler, wherein the CPU is already installed.
