Ok, so here is the deal, I downloaded win7 .iso home prem with sp1, but the x16-96072 under my license is different from the sp1 version iso i downloaded.

so far the product key has worked but will my key stay active? its the same os, I just wanted to do a clean install and saw one with sp1, so naturally.......

thanks in advance!

A trusted source.
Go ahead and try to validate. As far as I know a downgrade from Pro to Home Premium could work.
If validation gives you grief - talk to MS and see if they'll work it out for you.

edit;
see you updated the versions so both are Home Premium. Your product key should work fine.
You should have known immediately if the product key validation had failed to work.

As long as you got the .iso from a trusted source and didnt grab one of the many 'pre-infected malware' versions out there you should be in good shape.

wow, you guys are great.

I have an acer 5552 and yeah, im using the product key that is on my nb, i did format the hd, but its a ssd, I wanted a fresh install wo all the crap acer loaded me down with and the reason for the ssd, well, need i say more? I performed all of the w7 tweaks for optimal performance, and so far so good!

PS, this site is amazing, Im pretty much self taught with pc's, and absorb like a sponge. Been on macs for a while but im just sick of being sick.

I realized after it was too late that formatting wasnt needed on the ssd. I did verify that trim was enabled, and things are screaming.

should mention that i got the download online, digital river? i just needed a clean install, and the backup acer crap just reloads all the bloatware.

Yes you can. I am assuming you ended up with 32 bit.

The keys are interchangeable between 32 bit and 64 bit. You just installed the wrong version. Perhaps your disk didn't have the correct version.

You will have to activate over the phone if you used they key on the system case.

I downloaded the correct version, I suspect that my oem product key was the culprit. anywho, im up and running!

again, thanks guys, I only wish i could contribute to this community, however, my knowledge base with microsoft is limited. My comprehension however isnt. Im a fast learner and look forward to doing what i can!

64 bit doesnt magically become 32 because of the product key. Gotta be something with the disk. But as long as your happy with it.

make sure you download the drivers for your laptop first

easiest thing to do is to download a program called double driver

this is a portable app that will let you backup your drivers onto a memory stick, install new os then load drivers back on

if you dont do this then you may have to search for a while online to find the right drivers for your device if microsofts drivers dotn work

not sure what you are talking about. My nb came with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. under my product key, is this, x16 97062.

I wanted a clean install.

I downloaded the windows 7 home premium 64 bit sp1, and i am wondering if the x17 24209 is a different build number or something.

so we are clear, I am aware of the difference in a 32bit/64bit os. If i did download a 32bit version, then my product key wouldnt have been an issue.

now, since ive gone through ms phone support, everything is fine. I just had to verify my version of windows. I downloaded it with a download manager as well.

Also, I burned all of my drivers to a disc prior to installing my ssd and fresh os, so that was never an issue.

Falcon, I think i confused you or something, srry for not being specific enough.
