I have just started to build a PC. The motherboard is Mini-ITX and I will install RAM, PicoPSU, CPU and heatsink outside the case.

The motherboard did not come with a foam pad as some do, but I have a anti static mat that I will use while installing the parts. However, the mat is very thin and will not provide any suspension, only protection against ESD. The backside of motherboard contains a M.2 slot and of course all the component leads sticking out.

If I insert the parts into the motherboard while it's placed on a hard surface, wouldn't the backside of motherboard become damaged?
