can i install single channel ram on dual channel motherboard

I need to upgrade my pc ram to 6gb.so I'm looking for a single channel 4gb ram.will it run on my dual channel motherboard and will it affect the working of my current 2gb ram?can i experience the 6gb ram after installation.

There's no dual or single channel RAM sticks. Two RAM sticks can work in dual channel, one alone can't. On the other hand, RAM sticks could be dual or single RANK and that's not same thing.
