Can I install the Windows 8 upgrade without another OS?

I have windows 7 on my first SSD and I want windows 8 on my second SSD, I don't have an existing OS on my second one though. Is there a way to install my windows 8 upgrade onto the second drive without wiping out my copy of WIN7? I've got a disk to install and when I enter my product key it just says " we couldn't verify your product key, try entering it again" so I'm not really sure what do at this point.

What key is it balking at? The windows 7 key used for upgrade verification? Or the windows 8 upgrade key?

That's not good... indicates a mismatch of media and key. The key should validate if the media is correct or the key is actually valid. Make sure your not missing a digit somehow...
Media older than key = validation failure possible
Key older than media = good to go 99% of the time.
