Yes, you can use it that way. As he already explained, HDMI input (no matter from what port) -> Elgato -> HDMI cable output to your monitor or tv. If you are using a graphics card, that automatically overrides your motherboard HDMI port (if you have one, if you don't, then this doesn't apply anyway and you can just use the GPU one).

Video Card/console video port > Elgato > Monitor/tv
Then you connect a USB cable to your computer to actually transfer the recording data off the elgato.
You don't need an Elgato to record PC stuff though.

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking either. Have you tried reading the manual?

Use it for what?
You can't send video signals TO the GPU or Motherboard, because those are video outputs only. Monitors and TVs have video inputs.

no dude not that im asking video signal from (gpu's hdmi > elgato > monitor) or (motherboard hdmi>elgato>monitor ).
which one from above is required to use elgato?

(gpu's hdmi > elgato > monitor)

Your motherboard is not outputing any video if you're using your GPU.

so james can i use it that way or its a no go?
well a friend suggested me to use dvi to hdmi adapter on my old monitor
will this be useful?

after these two question answered i can end the thread,so please reply soon.
