Can I make my SSD my boot drive without any special costly programs if it's on another drive?

To be perfectly honest, - whether it's harder or not - I'd rather transfer my OS to the SSD on my own without a program so I know what I'm doing. Is this possible?

All you can do is a fresh install to the SSD if you didnt want to clone.
