Would like to back up my Samsung 840 EVO 250gb SSD with Win 8.1 to a new internal WD 1tb HD in a new build? It's my first windows build and have NO experience with windows! I had to spend 65 minutes with an Indian Microsoft customer support person because I installed the WD after installing Win 8.1on the SSD and windows thought it was a different system. I think I can work through the partition & format steps but want to set up one partition for back ups & the other for games & misc software. If someone is kind enough to answer, I will need "step by step" instructions as I'm a "computer challenged" 80 year old trying to keep up with the changing world!

Hey there, yippykiyaa!

Here are a couple of links from WD's KB with step-by-steps on how to, first, initialize your HDD and then partition and format it.
How to initialize: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PVXA0o
How to partition and format: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=SQxH4u

As for the backup of your SSD on the WD HDD, you can use a backup software or a cloning one, that will create an image of the whole system and files from the SSD. Check Acronis True Image WD edition here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=W2muiC

Hope this helps you! Keep me posted if you have more questions or need further instructions! :)

Thxs for the feedback. Would like to know what drive to download the Acronis on? The SSD that has the OS or the WD 1tb clean disc? Or CD, USB? I looked at Acronis manual and did not see instructions for download site.

That's why I'm here! :)
Well, if it's the SSD that you want to backup, download it there and set the backup/clone destination to the WD HDD.
But first, you need to partition and format that hard drive and arrange the partitions that you wish to have.
Afterwards do the clone/backup of your SSD.
Keep in mind though, that this is not really a backup solution, if the drive is in your system.
I'd suggest to have a backup of your whole system somewhere off-site as well. This is the best way to protect yourself from data loss!
