While a faster speed should slow down to the slower speed, w/ probably different timings/ latency's, & possibly other things The major issue (at least to me) is not they do/do not work, but the potential fir isues later, hangs, blue screens, freezes etc.
I believe in matching memory's to the mobo makers QVL.
 
Agree you should always use matched memory. Even buying the same make/model at a latter date can not guarantee that it will be trouble free. Really the only sure way is to buy the memory you are going to need as a single kit at one time.

With that said you can minimize any problems by getting memory of the same speed/specs. If you need to add memory to your rig at least match the specs as close as you can.
