Can I output audio from my monitor to my headset via my PC?

I'm planning on buying a modern monitor (my present monitor is a cheap one from 2009), and I also plan to use the monitor with a PS3, and later a PS4.

The monitor I have in mind has two audio jacks: one for PC input and one headphone jack. I'd just connect to the headphone jack, but the headset I have is a USB headset, so that's a no go.

What I'm thinking, then, is to use an audio cable to connect the headphone jack on the monitor to the blue line-in jack on my motherboard, thereby outputting sound via my computer.

Is this is a good idea or does it make no sense? What can I do make PS3 sounds come out of my headset?

you might run into possible loop which either results in audio screech (for lack of correct term) or breaks the audio amplifier on the computer's audio chip. (most likely the first)

PC outputs audio.
audio goes to monitor
audio goes from monitor to pc's line in
said line in is by default, also put to audio out.

edit: As for what you can do... since googling shows no good 3.5mm to usb conversion options (only other way around) and no external sound amp/cards with usb output (why would they, usb is not as good) you are pretty much stuck with... "get better headset with some other connector besides USB" option.
most good ones come with 3.5mm or 6.3mm plugs with usb dongle as extra. (and if they don't, said usb to 2x3.5mm jacks costs like 4 or 5usd to start with.

Surely the loop problem is eliminated if I disable my graphic card's audio output? That way, the PC does not output to audio, and the only sound the monitor can send to the PC would be from the console.

Is it technically possible to do what I have in mind, though? Send audio from a headphone jack to a line-in? What sort of cable do I need for that?

yes, if you disable audio output from computer, then it is in theory possible.
you would need generic 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable. Following is an example, they are supplied in many colors and also with 90 degree angled connectors also.

Possible downside that might make it non-working solution is again the headphone's USB only connection.
USB connected headphones do NOT use computers soundcard at all, they do all sound processing on the chip embedded on the USB connector. (and use CPU to do the work)
Will it even accept audio in from another sound card? quite unlikely.
Then again, that 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable doesn't cost much anyway and testing is pretty much only way to know.

Good luck in trying though.

What I have in mind is to enable "Listen through this device". I am currently using that option in Windows to enable Stereo Mix for my headphones (useful for when I'm streaming games over Skype).

My present, complicated audio set-up works like this:

My default audio playback device is the onboard motherboard's sound device. I enable Stereo Mix, and then enable "Listen through this device", set to my Headphones. So essentially my headphones pick up Stereo Mix, rather than getting the sound directly.

All I essentially have to do is to disable the audio device on my graphics card, and have the Line In device be listened through my Headphones as well.

I'll be sure to try this crazy plan when I get my monitor and console in a few months from now. Hopefully I'll remember to update this thread with my results.
