I have an rx 580 8GB DDR5 Armor gpu
And a be quiet 400W gold psu. It has been working fine for me but Im thinking of overclocking my gpu. Is this possible or do I need a psu with higher watt?

Solution
First, update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS.

Second, you need to determine the current load being imposed on your PSU by adding up all of the component wattages. Then add in 25% more. How close is that wattage value to 400?

The calculators in the following link should help:

Third, you need to refer to the Motherboard's and GPU's respective User Guide/Manuals to learn specifically how much overclocking can be done and any possible consequences regarding power requirements and performance.

You may not gain much performance. And there are risks. Read all notes and fine print.

On modern gpus overclocking headroom is usually pretty limited. You might yield better results with undervolting the card to decrease noise and powerdraw. You might even reach higher clocks due to more thermal headroom.
Im not too familiair with undervolting my graphics card. People tell me that if u dont know what ur doing u shouldnt try undervolting cuz it might damage my card. So Idk how to undervolt. Perhaps u know a video that gives info about this topic?

In basic terms undervolting means lowering the voltage of the gpu under load until it gets unstable. V*A=W so this lowers the overall power consumption and heat output of the card. It is important to do this by small increments and test stability to detect a voltage that is too low. This will not damage the card. If you mess it up so bad you cant boot, you need to boot in safe mode, so the software changes are not applied. Never happend to me before though.
It is also posdible to overclock the gpu and still lower the voltage if it is stable. In the end you might get a faster and more steady boost clock while having a quieter card overall.
