Can I Overclock this GPU?

Solution
It's been a *bit* more than 8-9 hours.. 🙁 oops.. Really sorry about that life kinda happened. Darn math projects.

The reason that I don't suggest OCing the RAM is that you don't see any noticeable, real world performance gains. You could sure do it, but I don't think it's worth it IMO.

And the OC button on the motherboard should automatically overclock the CPU, as you can't really overclock the motherboard, just the components on/attached to it. If you don't want to fiddle with all the settings you could do a quick and dirty overclock with the button, then check the speeds in the BIOS after you do that. The auto-OCs are generally very conservative and are good for what they do. It's free, isn't it? :)
This card is a good card to OC but:
* It depends on your current PC spec (write it down so we can see).
* It will void your warranty.
* It's a electronic part so everything can happen.

Important note:
You can't know how high to OC before you try it coz every card has its own limits so - Look at this video guide. It will take you from Step 1 to the end and will answer all your above questions.

Good Luck and Enjoy.

Only way to find out for sure is to try!

You need to know what temperatures you're getting and if you will be fine with a bit more heat and fan speed. I think the 7970/280x is pretty toasty, but the cooling on that one should help out.

Every card is different. No 2 will overclock the same. If your temperatures are good, start overclocking by giving slight 25 mhz bumps to the core clock. If one bump is stable, repeat. If it's not stable, back it off by about 10-15 mhz until it is.

Also, most manufacturers don't cover this in warranty, but they really don't have a way to find out if it's returned to them stock I don't think. When I had an XFX card they were even OK with me removing the heatsink and reapplying thermal compound. It depends on the company.

For a real time temperature graph and an overclocking utility, use MSI Afterburner or something else if you really prefer. Afterburner is really good IMO. Anything under 80* C is safe long term, I believe. Anything higher could reduce lifespan, however those cards are designed to withstand heat. The new 290x is designed to run at 95*C all the time IIRC. You shouldn't have any issues with temps, as your case fan situation is pretty good as long as they're not super low airflow.

When overclocking, don't crap if your screen goes black if an overclock fails. The cards are designed to reset (or whatever the technical term would be. it usually will say "display driver stopped working and recovered") when they don't have enough voltage or the clock is too high. Just go to the last stable overclock and adjust as needed.

Good luck. I've never had any issues with overclocking. As long as you're not increasing the voltage to some ungodly amount, you shouldn't hurt the card. For someone new to overclocking (which is what you appear to be. sorry if I'm wrong) I dont' recommend messing with voltages, as that's really the only way to screw anything up at all.

If you don't want the absolute maximum overclock but just a little bit more, you could just bump the core clock 75 to 100 Mhz and forget it as long as you're not seeing any issues with the display or crashing. I think almost all cards can handle that, but not sure as I haven't owned enough GPUs (only about 5 in the last few years) to really give a generalization.

EDIT: The stock overclock on that card is already pretty dang aggressive as far as that goes. 1100 Mhz is nothing to scoff at. If you can hit 1200 Mhz with your overclock, that would be amazing. There should be no need to go further than that IMO. That card is pretty powerful. If you don't need an overclock and just want MOAR FPS for the heck of it it might not be worth it. That's up to you though.

Nice card choice BTW. That is a really nice model by the looks of it.

Yes i have never OC'd or built a PC. It will be my first time...do u even think i should OC?

SPECS WILL BE

i5 4670k
MSI G65 Z87 motherboard ( 1 button click OC, should I?)
2x4 8GB G,skill ripjaw X series 1600mhz ram (should i oc)
xfx 750w 80+gold Fully modular PSU
Sapphire Toxic R9 280x (should I oc it or just stay safe?)
1TB Seagate barracuda 7200rpm HDD
1 corsair fan (top)
1 fractal Fan (rear)
2 stock case fans ( 2 as front intake)
all in one Fractal design define R4 black pearl window

so please answer which parts i should oc or shouldnt.

i dont recommend you oc anything until you have done your research... some manufacturers will invalidate the warranty if the hardware has been overclocked to the point it broke... so make sure you have the knowledge before attempting anything... even if your gonna use apps from windows to oc, make sure you understand the limits they adhere to...

guys i dont live in the USA ... they ship it to my bro and then he ships it to me from newyork to the middle east.....16 hours away...by plane. Warranty wont matter.

Well that changes it I guess if warranty isn't an issue.

If you don't need the OC for any reason, I say don't do it. If you don't need the performance, why take the risk, even if it is really small? If you need/want the OC, try the 1 click option, although it will only overclock the CPU, I believe. That option generally really safe and does a conservative overclock.

Once you build it, see how it performs. If you don't get what you want, give it a shot. If you're playing games at 1080p, you shouldn't need to overclock. That's a powerful system and has no issues. Good job picking parts, and I really mean that. If I were building one in that price range, that's about what I'd get. It's really balanced and looks classy thanks to the case.

However, don't overclock the RAM. It yields little to no gains in games and it's not worth the instability that could come. Sometimes RAM is really finicky for overclocking and can cause system hangs/freezes that suck but aren't gonna break anything.

whoops where did that link come from ?? okay I will not go see the graphics card but what about the RAM I can't even oc it to 1867 or 2100mhz? and the motherboard only has a one click to OC should(the button is literally on the motherboard ) what if i do that and also what does Oc'ing a motherboard even do?

thanks for the compliment and I will pick You as best answer after you answer those 2 questions

Oh ok 😀 I cant OC the CPU Cause i dont after an aftermarket cooler...later i will 😀 That button makes it easier...ok here is solution for you :)

Thanks. If you can pick up a Hyper 212 or something similar in price you should have no issues if you want to overclock a bit. It will also be a lot quieter than the stock cooler. Since you got the Define R4, it will be a lot quieter, and I'd think that silence matters somewhat to you since you got the case. Even if silence isn't a huge deal, you'll appreciate it I think.

I'm ready to get an R4 myself once Best Buy gets it back in stock. Only reason I'd buy something from there is because I have a gift card and it's really expensive on Amazon/Newegg last time I checked.

Good luck with everything!

This.. No point in risking your money + GPU.

Thanks! I got the R4 window'd edition which still shouldnt be loud! its89.99$ On newegg :)

WHAT?
GET THE R4! It has a window....R4 is much better..It looks better..but they are the same. I'd get the R4....cause i got one xD

I know, but it's a lot more expensive for me right now. The Corsair is $85 on amazon last I saw. I think it was "like new" direct from amazon's warehouse deals or an open box or something. I can't find the R4 for a decent price it seems. If you have a link to the R4 for $90 or so I'd get it instantly. The best I've seen lately is around $110 for the black windowed version, which looks awesome.

The reason I prefer amazon is because my parents have Prime so I'd get a giant 20 lb hunk of metal shipped via 2 day for free, which is really nice. I can't find a black R4 on amazon that has free shipping and a decent price. Also, I think that the Titanium one looks too much like a refrigerator. The cheapest one I saw was like $110+ shipping. I can't find any that are Prime eligible 🙁

Aww the price went up on newegg for 109 🙁 Ugh i guess you have one choice..the 550d is good but if you can spend a bit more to get the fractal for 110$, that'd be great. Its worth the 20$ more

I'm thinking about waiting until black friday, though. Considering its popularity, I'd think there'll be a sale somewhere. I have a Phantom 410 that my dog scratched to heck and that vibrates like a ***** because both of the side panels don't close right and pick up vibrations from the HDD. I also had to switch GPUs because my 660 Ti made this horrible high pitched coil whine. However, it was so high pitched that my parents said they couldn't hear it. So, I sold it locally as functional and the buyer had no complaints at all. The buyer was an adult, so I don't think they could actually hear it.

Anyways, what that boring backstory was getting to is that I'm in a bit of a bad spot. When I did my sidegrade/slight downgrade to the 7870 I ended up making $50 because I picked up the 7870 new for $125 😀 I'm saving up for a school band trip to SoCal and Vegas so money is tight for me. My parents said they'd pay for 1/2 of it (apparently they had good memories of those band trips), but I can't work much of a job to get the other half because of other commitments. I'm working very part time on weekends to scrounge up the $$$ for the trip. Again, money is really tight, but I'm using that $50 I made to get a case that is designed to be quiet, since I moved the PC to my room on the desk. What I thought was dead silent out in the family room is NOT silent on a desk in my room, that's for sure.

Haha! Nice! Im from SoCal :)
