Hey, so i built my 'Budget' system a while back and i am now wanting to OC my CPU, so i just baught a Hyper 212 EVO and i want to know what i will be able to OC my CPU too.
AMD FX 8350
AMD R9 280x
GA-970A-DS3P MOBO (I know its not the best)
Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO
Corsair CX600M
8GB corsair vengance

Does anyone know if i will be able to OC to around 4.5Ghz as that seems doable from looking around

Solution
the Hyper 212 EVO is pretty much the sweet spot as far as air based coolers go. it is not THE BEST, but it's plenty good enough for all purposes of everyday use (I'm assuming you don't care about chasing benchmark high scores and getting that lst 100 mhz out of your CPU).

you should be able to overclock your CPU with that cooler plenty. I don't know exactly how far it will go as that varies from chip to chip, but from what I have seen 4.5 or 4.6 ghz should not be a problem

Sorry, im a noob, but do you mind just looking in detail at the board because after looking online im a bit worried i cant OC with it, So i would appriciate peace of mind, Thanks

well, like you said, it's not the best mobo, but I think it'll be fine. just don't push too hard for that last 100 mhz.

basically, as you slowly increase voltage and your clock speed, you will hit a "wall" where you need to add lots of extra voltage to get another 100 mhz or so out of the CPU. at that point, back off and go to your lower clock setting and you'll be fine.

the 970 chipset are for moderate OC for heavy OC the 990 fx chipset is good.

Ok thanks, So when i OC say to 4.5Ghz will i have to change the voltage?

on paper, your mobo supports overclocking "up to 7.5 Ghz" for the Bios settings.

the only issue is that you only have 4+1 phases so the power system isn't the best, which is why I said don't push it.

these guys used the board for overclocking a Phenom II chip here:
http://extremespec.net/gigabyte-ga-970a-ds3p-motherboard-review-design-testing-performance/3/

after overclocking test the CPU with prime 95 for about 1 hrs if the cpu passes the stress test then the OC is stable.

most likely yes, but not by much. you should be able to get to 4.2Ghz without touching the voltage at all. you can try for 4.3Ghz without touch the voltage, and then slowly nudge the voltage up as you go along. you're being cautious and asking questions first which is good. but as I'm sure you've read (or already know), overclocking can be different from chip to chip and you have to try it yourself to find out. it's rather fun and rewarding as long as you have time to play with it :)

be cautious, but don't be scared, small nudges won't kill anything. FYI try to keep it under 1.4v and increase voltage in 0.005 or 0.01 increments.
